1) What do you think substances actually do to your body and brain?
(This could refer to vaping, marijuana, opioids, alcohol, or any other emerging substances your kids are faced with or curious about).
  • Affects brain development: Substances like alcohol, nicotine, cannabis, and other drugs can interfere with how a young brain develops, especially areas responsible for decision-making, memory, and emotional control.
  • Changes how your body works: These substances can mess with heart rate, sleep, and energy levels, making it harder to focus in school, play sports,   or feel like yourself.
  • Increases risk long-term: Starting young can make it more likely for someone to struggle with addiction or mental health issues later in life, since the body and brain are still growing and more vulnerable.

2) If your friends offered you something risky, what would you do?
(Make sure you both know, this question is not to "test" them but rather to  encourage conversation and openness and to ensure they feel you are a safe space when things get tough).
  • It’s okay to say no, and still be cool: Real friends respect your choices. You can say “no thanks” without making it a big deal or losing friendships.
  • Have a plan ahead of time: Practice a few ways to get out of uncomfortable situations,    like blaming a parent, changing the subject, or suggesting something else to do.
  • You’re not alone: Lots of kids and teens choose to avoid risky stuff. It might feel like “everyone’s doing it,” but most aren’t.    You can always talk to a trusted adult if you’re unsure.
    • Pro-Tip:    You can  decide on a code word together that they can text you or say on a phone call   for when they are feeling uncomfortable! Pick something simple and easy to remember, and let them share with any safe adults, friends and family. Then you can    create a plan of action together that will be taken upon receiving the code word!
    • Pro-Tip: Check out our Safe Homes Smart Parties Program, a   prevention tool for parents to help their children avoid risky situations. This   programs  give  parents an opportunity to join together in providing safe, drug and alcohol-free environments for their teenagers to socialize.
    • Pro-Tip:     Encourage   your kids to only take medications prescribed to them. If it didn't come from your doctor or pharmacy, you can't be sure if it is safe!
3)  Who do you feel comfortable talking to when things get tough?
(This one may  require less guidance,  but it is always a good idea to remind your kids of all of the safe and trusted people they have in their corner).
  • Everyone needs someone: It’s normal to feel overwhelmed sometimes. Having a trusted person to talk to,  like a parent, teacher, coach, or friend, makes a big difference.
  • You don’t have to figure it out alone: Talking things through helps you feel less stressed and can lead to better solutions than trying to deal with everything on your own.
  • We’re here for you,    no judgment: Let your child know that you’re always available to listen,  understand and help.
    • Pro-Tip: Make sure you are having these types of conversations    frequently, as it is not a one-and-done talk. This will help normalize the feeling of communicating about difficult topics!
